Bacman: bringing a game of war and alliance to the classroom
This workshop is led by Josephine Solowiej-Wedderburn, postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, and IceLab, Gabrielle Beans, research coordinator, Department of Physics and IceLab, together with students from engineering programmes at Umeå University.
This workshop explores how games can open up new ways of thinking, learning, and engaging with complex ideas across subjects and age groups. Using a case study from our own research, we’ll show how a question in microbial ecology (when do bacteria compete or cooperate?) was transformed into a simple game and what both researchers and students learnt in the process. During the workshop there will be opportunities to play the game, reflect on how it supports learning, and discuss how similar approaches could be adapted for different teaching contexts.
